Taking a traditional udon and tempura making class in a 90-year-old Japanese house was an unforgettable experience. The atmosphere was steeped in history, with the wooden beams and tatami mats providing a cozy, authentic backdrop. Ayumi, a warm and knowledgeable instructor, guided me through each step of preparing fresh udon noodles from scratch and frying delicate tempura. The hands-on experience allowed me to appreciate the art of these classic dishes, while the instructor’s insights into Japanese cooking traditions deepened my understanding. The class was intimate, with plenty of opportunities to ask questions, and the final meal was both satisfying and delicious. It was a wonderful way to connect with Japanese culture in such a unique setting.

Japanese Home Cooking Class in Tokyo (Onigiri & Tamagoyaki)
Cooking Classes
This was a fun and interactive presentation of two of Japan's favorite comfort foods, onigiri and tamagoyaki. Admittedly, I'm not the greatest cook, but with their expert guides I was able to make easy and delicious snacks. I'm confident that with the recipe sheet provided and the right ingredients I could make these at home in the U.S. Participants were encouraged to do all the preparation themselves and with an expert translation we were able to copy the Japanese chef's instructions easily. It was a really nice experience. I would highly recommend.

Explore the Art of Dashi Cooking Classes

Dashi is a fundamental ingredient in Japanese cuisine, an essential component that infuses rich umami flavor into a wide array of dishes. Whether you're a seasoned cook or a beginner in the kitchen, enrolling in a Dashi Cooking Class is an opportunity to deepen your understanding of Japanese culinary traditions. These classes are designed to demystify the process of making dashi and to show you how to incorporate this savory stock into various recipes.

In these classes, you will learn different methods of preparing dashi from scratch using quality ingredients such as kombu (kelp) and katsuobushi (bonito flakes). By understanding the nuances of crafting dashi, you'll gain insights into achieving the delicate balance of flavors that Japanese cuisine is known for. These classes are not just educational but are also an enjoyable culinary journey into Japanese culture.

Hands-On Experience with Dashi Preparation

The hands-on approach of Dashi Cooking Classes allows participants to get practical experience in preparing this key Japanese stock. Under the guidance of experienced instructors, you will begin by learning about the various types of dashi. Discover how the simple combination of water, dried fish, and seaweed can bring depth and complexity to your cooking.

Classes typically cover various techniques and recipes, from creating the basic ichiban-dashi for soups and marinades to niboshi-dashi used in specific regional dishes. As you practice, you'll understand how to enhance the flavors of miso soup, noodle broths, and simmered dishes through the subtleties of well-made dashi. This experience is perfect for those seeking to elevate their home cooking or even professionals looking to refine their skills.

Connect with Japanese Culinary Traditions

Participating in a Dashi Cooking Class isn't just about cooking; it's an immersive experience into the heart of Japanese culture. Through the process of making dashi, you'll explore the storied history of Japanese culinary practices and the role they play in contemporary dining. Instructors often share stories and tips that have been passed down through generations, providing a deeper understanding of how dashi has shaped Japanese cuisine.

Besides cooking, these classes often include discussions on ingredient sourcing, nutritional benefits, and the sustainable practices of using high-quality dashi components. You’ll walk away with not only the skills to replicate these dishes at home but also a richer appreciation of the cultural significance of what you're cooking.
