It's not easy to find vegan restaurants in Japan, but did you know that Buddhist monks have been following a plant-based diet with no animal products for the last 800 years? Buddhist meals (shojin ryori) are delicious, healthy, and naturally vegetarian (and, in some cases, also vegan).
Learn how to make a vegan Buddhist meal in this cooking class with Yuka in her home in Setagaya, Tokyo. Feel the atmosphere of an authentic Japanese kitchen as you cook and chat together! Create a seasonal, multi-dish meal with delicious specialties like grilled tofu, lotus slices, soup, and a vegetable salad. The host can also make this class halal-friendly by not using alcohol in the ingredients (please note that ingredients are not halal-certified).

Yuka follows a gluten-free diet, so she can recommend delicious gluten-free restaurants, as well as vegan and vegetarian tips for your time in Tokyo! You can also go to the supermarket with your host to shop for the ingredients before the experience starts (please see the Options below for more information).
Sample Menu (exact contents subject to change depending on availability and seasonality):
-Main dish: Tofu grilled between lotus root slices, sesame tofu
-Seasonal vegetable dish: Green leafy vegetables and grilled mushroom mashed tofu salad, seasonal vegetable salad
-Pickled seasonal vegetables
-Tofu and vegetable chowder
-Rice (white or half-milled) cooked in a pot instead of a rice cooker
-Japanese tea
