Noriko-san is a very kind and an awesome host! She welcomed me with a sign that her daughter made. It was soo adorable that I took a photo! At that moment I did know the experience would be great! Firstly she helped me wearing yukata and explained me all the details about it. She has soo much to share and teach that I got impressed! Later we got a photo session and it was gorgeous. And then she teach me and demonstrated about the tea ceremony and explained how to behave, to make the tea and all the steps to get through it! Soo many details but she was pretty patient and respect my struggles. We also prepared an Okonomiyaki together that was super fun! My first time making it and I got proud of myself at the end, since I don't have any cooking skills. But actually, she also prepared a huge banquet! She loves cooking and teach me about the ingredients and how to make it properly. After all these activities we also had a Koto lesson. At first she made her performance and was soo glamorous! I love it! And then she instructed me how to play it. It was pretty hard but I was enjoying a lot! All these activities were at her home and that's something that became more special! The welcoming feeling was unique. Her husband and her daughter were adorable and welcome us as she did. I'm 100% would recommend her experience to people that want to visit Japan. She brings all sorts of of activities in an unique and special way with a lot of knowledge. Thank you for hosting us, Noriko-san!

I had a lot of fun experiencing tea ceremony and playing the Japanese instrument. The place was very cozy, and Noriko, our host, created a very relaxing atmosphere. I also had a chance to wear a Japanese traditional kimono as an optional service. We took lots of photos to capture wonderful memories! Thanks Noriko for such a wonderful moment!

The tea ceremony was a delightful experience. Our hostess was incredibly knowledgeable about the art of tea preparation, and she guided us in making our own matcha using the techniques she taught. We were so inspired that we purchased a matcha whisk and matcha powder afterward to continue practicing at home.

Noriko is a wonderful, great, friendly and funny lady. She has a lot of knowledge about Japanese history and loves to share that. She’s an excellent kimono-sensei (teacher), has a great selection of very precious kimonos, also in big sizes. She’s a wonderful matcha teacher; serves delicious green tea with traditional Japanese sweet, while she explains the history of tea ceremonies.

Discover Traditional Japanese Sweets: Higashi

Nestled in the vibrant culinary landscape of Japan, Higashi represents a delicate and symbolic aspect of traditional Japanese confectionery. These exquisitely crafted dry sweets are a staple in tea ceremonies and cultural events, known for their beautiful forms and subtle flavors. Higashi is often handcrafted from ingredients such as glutinous rice flour, sugar, and a variety of natural flavorings, giving them a light and crisp texture. For those keen on experiencing a culinary journey through Japan's sweet traditions, participating in Higashi-making classes or tasting sessions offers a unique glimpse into the country's rich cultural heritage.

Learn the Art of Higashi-Making

Higashi-food experiences are not only delightful but also deeply immersive, allowing participants a hands-on opportunity to learn the intricacies of this traditional craft. Workshops often start with a brief introduction to the history and significance of Higashi in Japanese culture. Participants can then engage in the step-by-step process of creating these sweets. Starting with the selection of quality ingredients, the experience covers the techniques of pressing and shaping the delicate sweets, as well as the artistic design aspects that make Higashi a visual delight. Guided by experienced artisans, these sessions are an excellent way to appreciate the fusion of art and gastronomy.

Savor the Subtleties of Flavor and Aesthetics

Beyond merely learning how to make Higashi, these food experiences highlight the important role these sweets play in Japanese aesthetics and hospitality. With flavors that range from subtle to slightly sweet, each piece is designed to complement the bitterness of matcha tea. The aesthetic appeal of Higashi, with its intricate patterns and seasonal motifs, embodies the Japanese principle of bringing harmony between taste and appearance. Food lovers who engage with these experiences often find a deeper appreciation for the nuanced balance found in Japanese confectioneries. This journey of taste and artistry is a perfect addition to any travel itinerary for those visiting Japan, offering a lasting appreciation of its culinary arts.
