Experience Details
The world of sushi-making is known for its rigor, with precise cuts, time-honed techniques, and a competitive restaurant scene. But learning to make sushi can be incredibly fun — that’s what Chef Akemi is here to prove. She creates a welcoming, light-hearted environment where you can learn to make four different kinds —nigiri, maki, gunkan and inari— following her guidance in her homey, cozy kitchen right in the heart of Tokyo.
With easy access from both Shinjuku and Shibuya, Sasazuka is a verdant district where you’ll be transported to a slower, more down-to-earth side of the city. Here, you’ll step into Akemi’s cozy kitchen for this sushi-making session. You’ll start by preparing the vinegared rice, then learn to form, roll, cut and press four different kinds of sushi. The menu includes classic nigiri (topped with tuna, salmon, shrimp and scallops and five other seasonal selections), rolled sushi (maki), gunkan (known as “battleship sushi”), and inari (morsels of vinegared rice inside pockets of tofu.)
Enjoy your generous sushi meal with a cup of sake or umeshu (plum wine) or non-alcoholic alternatives. You’ll wrap up with a serving of matcha or yuzu ice cream and take home a booklet with your host’s original recipes, so you can put your newfound sushi skills to good use again anytime.
