Experience Details

Onigiri (rice balls) are a Japanese staple that are almost infinitely customizable with different fillings. Walk into any convenience store and you’ll be greeted by shelves of different onigiri to choose from. But why settle for store-bought onigiri when you can learn to make your own and customize them to your liking?

In this onigiri bento box-making class in Yanaka, Tokyo, you’ll learn how to form onigiri into a variety of different shapes and designs to make a truly unique array of onigiri for your bento lunch box. Add fillings and toppings for an extra layer of flavor. Then, it’ll be time to add in a few extras!

Your onigiri will be paired with a selection of seasonal okazu (side dish) from local shops in Yanaka. Chosen by your hosts, these dishes will give you a window into the daily lives of the locals. Possible dishes include karaage (Japanese-style fried chicken), croquettes and Japanese-style omelets. Learn how to arrange your onigiri and side dishes to make a beautiful bento box. Be sure to take some pictures before you dig in!

Savor your meal alongside a comforting bowl of miso soup. You can enjoy chatting with your local hosts while you eat. Learn more about home-style Japanese dishes and get recommendations for places to enjoy more Yanaka home-style cooking.
