Experience Details
Become a mochi artisan for a day in this experience in Osaka’s Namba district. Mochi is one of Japan’s most beloved sweets, a chewy and soft confectionery known for its sticky texture, mild flavor and dense mouthfeel.
This popular snack may be readily available across the country, but the craft of making mochi the traditional way is still preserved and cherished, albeit rare. This experience allows you to learn more about mochi and get the unusual chance to pound and customize it by adding your favorite flavors!
You'll start with an introduction to mochi, its history, and its cultural significance in Japan. Mochi is served in multiple Japanese celebrations and cultural events, from New Year displays to sakura-viewing parties.
Next, you’ll get hands-on pounding steamed, short-grained glutinous rice using a traditional wooden mallet and mortar. As you pound the dough rhythmically, guided by your host, mochi's soft, chewy texture will start to emerge. Mochi pounding is invigorating, and the atmosphere will be both lively and exciting, with engaging guidance from hosts and even energetic shouts to set the pace!
Once your mochi is ready, you’ll cut it by hand and customize it by choosing from a variety of delicious flavors.
