Experience Details
A flagship icon of Okinawa, Naha’s Makishi Market has a long and convoluted history. Originally a black market for smuggled goods during the American occupation of the island, the market burned down almost entirely in the 1960s and was subsequently rebuilt after Okinawa regained Japanese sovereignty. Its latest refurbishment, now comprising three floors and dozens of fresh food stores, finished in 2023 after four years of restoration work. A pride and joy of locals, the Makishi Market is a prime destination to experience Okinawan food culture.
In this experience, you’ll enjoy a guided tour of the market. Your guide will show you the local seafood and its uses in Okinawan cuisine. After that, it’ll be time for a sushi-making class led by a professional chef. Although the exact ingredients depend on the season, typical toppings are salmon, tuna, bonito, grouper, and other fresh local fish sold at the market.
Once you finish cooking, you will enjoy the sushi you made with red miso soup, gari (sliced vinegared ginger usually served with sushi) and green tea. Sake and beer are available for purchase for an additional fee. Eat and drink your fresh sushi together with the hosts and other participants, enjoying the delicious, fresh seafood that Okinawa has to offer.
Known for its multicultural flair, historical sites, and entertainment options, Naha is the gateway to the rest of Okinawa islands, and a destination worth visiting in its own right. Makishi Market is located in central Naha, and is easily accessible by public transportation. After the experience, feel free to explore the nearby Kokusai Dori Shopping Street, bustling with stores and restaurants, or visit the traditional pottery district of Tsuboya.
