Yamasa Ryokan
Cooking up a “suppon” (turtle) extravaganza, this Kyushu inn has long been known as one of the best spots for sampling the unique delicacy.
Restaurant Details
Located in the mountainous east of Kyushu island, this traditional inn is one of the best places to try Japanese suppon (soft-shell turtle). Everything about the place centers around this delicacy, from the turtle motifs decorating its walls and placemats, to the dishes carved in the shape of them.
Guests are treated to an entire turtle-worth of dishes each, including baked liver, sashimi, hot pot, porridge, charcoal-grilled pieces, and fried pieces. Other meats are on offer for those who might feel a little squeamish about trying this famous Japanese delicacy.
Traditional wisdom promises a range of benefits for those who do though, including certain “stamina” boosting qualities for men. Though this belief remains unproven, what is undeniable is the hearty and delicate taste of the dishes at this expert turtle restaurant.
