In Nishi Azabu, this hidden yakiniku concept is offering carefully selected wagyu beef, including Hiroshima Prefecture’s elusive Jinseki beef, a breed so rare it’s called the “phantom wagyu."

Restaurant Details

Yakiniku Jinseki Nishiazabu opened in the spring of 2024 with a mission of introducing Hiroshima Prefecture's rare Jinseki beef to the masses in Tokyo. A type of kuroge wagyu (Japanese Black beef), it’s known for its soft, melt-in-your-mouth texture and hints of sweetness in the fat.

An ancient, endemic species, Jinseki beef has always had a strong reputation, but its popularity skyrocketed when it was served to U.S. President Joe Biden during a trip to Tokyo in 2022. Today, raised at an altitude of 700 meters, only 400 heads of Jinseki cattle are shipped each year from the small mountain town of Jinsekikogen. They have turned into a prized commodity so rare that it has been called a "phantom wagyu."

The restaurant’s beef is sourced directly from producers in Jinsekikogen as part of a local initiative, which allows the restaurant to ensure that they only serve the highest quality Jinseki wagyu beef. They combine their top-quality wagyu with various seasonal ingredients to create a delightful journey through dishes that bring out the tender and juicy flavors of Jinseki beef.

The restaurant was designed with intense attention to detail. Eight counter seats, plus tables and private rooms, are kept intimate, but this was done deliberately, allowing customers to be fully surrounded by the delightful aromas of the wagyu. The interior uses plenty of real old wood motifs and transoms inspired by the silhouettes of a traditional Japanese folk house but still has an air of modernity. Just a 10-minute walk from Roppongi station in the hip Nishi Azabu district, Yakiniku Jinseki Nishiazabu is the perfect spot to wrap up a day spent shopping or pursuing the art galleries of Roppongi.
