Shofukuro Honten
An authentic taste of Shiga, just a short day trip from central Tokyo.
Restaurant Details
Yokaichi, a town in Shiga Prefecture, is famous for its area of old Meiji era merchant houses from its days as a wax producing center in the 19th century. In this area is situated a kaiseki restaurant which is highly rated among both the gourmands and top chefs of Japan. The stately old home which houses it benefits from an abundance of space both inside and out.
The kitchen has produced some great cooking talents over the years, who learned their trade here as apprentices. If you fancy becoming the latest disciple of their craft, the owner will be happy to chat to you about traditional culture and cuisine, provided you know enough Japanese to get by.
His omakase set menu consists of about a dozen dishes which change throughout the year. You can expect some exciting dishes from the region, including wild game caught in the nearby forests.
If you find yourself in the Shiga region and want an authentic taste of what the place has to offer, Shofokuro Honten is exactly the place you’re looking for.
