Minokichi Takeshigero Hotel Granvia Kyoto
One of Kyoto’s most luxurious hotels hosts one of the city’s most historic kyo-kaiseki restaurants.
Restaurant Details
The Minokichi restaurants need no explanation. Even in a city full of restaurants laden with history, Minokichi — with its main branch renamed Takeshigero in 1992 — is among the oldest, first founded over 300 years ago in the Kyoho era as a specialist in serving freshwater fish.
Due to its being set in a hotel, the exterior of Minokichi Takeshigero’s Hotel Granvia Kyoto branch may not look quite as grandiose as the main branch near the Heian Jingu Shrine. Nonetheless, its interior is unmistakably Takeshigero; walking past the bamboo-lined facade leads diners into a beautifully artistic mix of traditional Japanese and modern design. Private rooms offer choices of traditional tatami seating, or more contemporary Western styling.
Freshwater fish is one of the most common ingredients in traditional Kyoto-style kaiseki (kyokaiseki), given Kyoto City’s relative distance from the sea, but proximity to Lake Biwa and the Kamo River. It’s often through freshwater fish dishes that a kyokaiseki restaurant is judged, and Minokichi Takeshigero is not found wanting here.
In the true spirit of kyokaiseki cuisine, the menus change according to the seasons, featuring unagi (freshwater eel) in summer and matsutake mushrooms in the fall, the latter usually either grilled or cooked in an earthenware pot of rice.
Of course, just as crucial to the Kyoto school of kaiseki is the hospitality with which it’s served, and it’s also in this regard that Minokichi Takeshigero outdoes all its contemporaries. Service staff present each course with a comprehensive explanation and a winning smile.
