———

Sushi Yoshino is the perfect example of excellence running in the blood. The current iteration of the store is run by three generations of the Yoshino family: the original owner, his son, and his grandson.

2024 marks the restaurant’s 70th anniversary, but the flow of customers through its doors only continues to grow. A regular fixture on the Michelin Guide Tokyo as a Bib Gourmand recipient, Sushi Yoshino is considered one of the best representatives of Edomae sushi in its most unadulterated form.

A major selling point of the restaurant is its incorporation of seasonal sushi toppings, rotating through options like mackerel, sayori (Japanese halfbeak) and stewed hamaguri clam, but the 10-piece spread of standard Edomae nigiri is also extremely popular. With Edomae staples like aged tuna, kohada (gizzard shad) and conger eel, the course serves as many visitors’ introduction to the world of Edomae sushi — and the inevitable raising of their standards.

The restaurant is sparsely decorated; its 8-seat counter takes up most of the space, with another eight seats available in a private room. This is a deliberate design choice to let visitors focus entirely on the sushi before them without distraction.
