Nestled in metropolitan Nishi Azabu, Michelin-selected Hakunei raises the bar for creative French cuisine bolstered by uniquely Japanese ingredients.

Restaurant Details

A popular filming location near the international hub Hiroo, the prestigious Nishi Azabu adds a distinct metropolitan atmosphere where restaurants like the Michelin-starred Hakunei flourish. Within easy walking distance of Hiroo Station, Hakunei’s basement location welcomes guests into a chic hideaway decked in white and cream tones that let the cuisine shine without competition.

Having cultivated his skills at legendary French restaurant Florilege and nearby Margotto e Baciare, chef Hayashi Dai has a keen eye for drawing out the most natural flavors of each ingredient. Straw is used to smoke meat for a richer umami flavor. Venison sourced from Hokkaido is smoked with straw, added with bonito stock and Japanese peppercorn. Adding hints of shiso and pickled plum is a deliberate move to let the flavor go with Burgundy Pinot Noir.

Guests will also find attributes of Chinese cuisine, especially in Hakunei’s spring rolls stuffed with seabream, mushroom and lardo. The sommelier oversees a diverse wine list of red and white wines perfectly tailored to each dish.

All these come together to make a culinary oeuvre worthy of a Michelin star — and so Hakunei received one in the Michelin Guide Tokyo 2025.

The eight-seat counter allows guests to watch Hayashi at work. Hakunei’s comfy yet sophisticated atmosphere makes it ideal for dates or anniversary celebrations. Parties of six or more can reserve the restaurant for private celebrations.
