Experience Details

The term “wagashi” refers to traditional Japanese sweets. Wagashi come in many shapes and forms, ranging from chewy mochi, to fresh-off-the-pan taiyaki, to little castella cakes and more. It’s impossible to visit Japan and not run into a kind of wagashi that you’ll enjoy.

In this cooking class, guests will learn how to make three different kinds of wagashi: matcha kakigori (Japanese shaved ice), mochi ice cream and warabi mochi (mochi dipped or covered in kinako, sweet toasted soybean flour). Taste the full range of wagashi flavors and textures in a single lesson! These Japanese desserts are especially delicious in the summer, but you can enjoy them year-round.

Experience flow:

-Arrive at the venue and greet Sakura, your instructor, who will introduce the recipes.

-Make the mochi dough for the ice cream and chill.

-Make mochi dumplings (dango) for the kakigori and chill.

-Wrap the ice cream with the chilled mochi dough and freeze.

-Make the warabi mochi, sprinkled with kinako (roasted soybean flour) and topped with brown sugar syrup.

-Make matcha kakigori topped with matcha dumplings, matcha ice cream and matcha syrup.

-Take lots of photos and dig in!
