Experience Details
Enoshima: A charming coastal town – just a stone's throw away from Tokyo – with a long history as a spiritual site for Japanese people, with shrines, temples, and monuments said to have been established almost 1500 years ago. The island itself is accessible by a scenic bridge and has long been a popular destination for tourists and residents alike. One such resident is your host–Fujioka Makiko–who has been sharing her passion for the sweeter things in life since 2012 with her Japanese confectionary (wagashi) cooking class.
Wagashi (和菓子) are traditional Japanese confectioneries or sweets. These bite-sized treats represent harmony and balance between nature and humanity while reflecting Japanese culture, customs, and values.
Wagashi often draws inspiration from the four seasons, as will the ones made in your experience. With the foundation laid, let's get down to business! Your adventure will begin at either Katase Enoshima Station or Fujisawa Station, where your host will greet you with open arms. From here, you’ll stroll to your wagashi workshop, where the magic will begin.
The workshop starts with a brief introduction about wagashi's rich history and cultural significance. Next, roll up your sleeves and dive into the artistry of wagashi-making. Watch on as your faithful host demonstrates each step with mesmerizing precision, nimble fingers effortlessly shaping the delicate dough, folding it into intricate patterns reminiscent of delicate origami. Now it's your turn to knead, roll, and pinch the wagashi dough to form your sweet creations.
Once you've completed your edible masterpieces, snap some pictures and let the tasting begin! Savor your handmade wagashi as you look out onto the stunning Enoshima shoreline. Leave this charming workshop with a heart full of memories, a box of carefully packaged wagashi, and a stroll along the sun-kissed shores of Enoshima.
