Known for its unique architectural design, Hokkaido Shrine is home to four guardian gods. With the temple being in the middle of Maruyama Park, it is a popular place in northern Japan to enjoy 1,500 cherry blossom trees during the spring. During summer, the temple has its annual summer festival where small shrines are carried throughout the city. Tourists and locals can enjoy the food and game stalls along the shrine while this event is happening. Visit during the winter and take in the ethereal scenery of snowfall on the frosted trees and buildings in the shrine.

Tourists and locals can enjoy the entire park after the shrine visit. Maruyama Zoo, which is adjacent to the temple, has 184 varieties of animals and is counted as the 10th largest zoo in Japan. During winter, Maruyama Athletic Stadium is turned into a massive outdoor rink where visitors can enjoy skating under the falling snow.
