Ushio
Try okonomiyaki cooked without oil for a more health-conscious comfort food meal (or go the other way with a hamburger meat variety!).
Restaurant Details
Anyone who has tried okonomiyaki — the style of layered savory pancake native to Osaka — knows that it’s in no way a healthy dish. However, USHIO in Roppongi has taken steps to change that. Their okonomiyaki is cooked totally oil-free, and packed with nutritious vegetables. That means you can enjoy one of the most inherently gluttonous dishes in Japanese cuisine without (as much) guilt!
They offer a range of styles. The standard is made with vegetables, batter, pork, shrimp, and squid. Beef fans will want to try their hamburger meat version, with fried egg on top. Okay, maybe all of that kind of negates the health benefits of oil free cooking… but whatever! You won’t mind once you take your first bite.
If you want to dial it back down to health-conscious levels, go for the seafood-only okonomiyaki instead. Their signature side is also worth a try — a parcel of shredded cabbage wrapped in gyoza dumpling meat and cooked!
The interior is homely, and the food is hearty. For a properly filling hit of Osaka comfort food, you can’t go wrong with USHIO.
