Rice and Circus Shibuya PARCO
Exotic meats like bear, giant isopod and fried gecko in the basement of Shibuya PARCO.
Restaurant Details
There are two types of Japanese foodies: those who perk up at the mention of the words Rice and Circus, and those who look horrified.
First established in Tokyo’s college town of Takadanobaba, Rice and Circus’ concept revolves around “gibier” cuisine. Originally a French term, the word gibier has been co-opted into Japanese to mean cooking that makes use of hunted game. While game isn’t exactly foreign to Japanese cuisine — wild boar and venison have been part of Japanese food since the Jomon period — Rice and Circus goes one step further by incorporating some truly bizarre ingredients into its menu.
Depending on the course menu of choice, diners can find themselves gnawing at the bones of crocodile “wings” raised in Australia, or cracking open a whole deep-fried giant isopod from Shizuoka Prefecture. It’s also worth noting that Rice and Circus is one of the rare places that serves bear in Japan outside of Hokkaido — it’s served salt-grilled, so the natural flavor of the bear can be enjoyed to the fullest.
More orthodox menu items are on the menu as well, including venison of Yezo sika deer from Hokkaido, but that’s about as “normal” as it gets. The restaurant is especially proud of its miso sukiyaki made with araiguma meat — Japanese badger.
But the objective isn’t just to have as strange a menu as possible. The restaurant’s philosophy is to reintroduce these meats into the diet of the general public — a more sustainable and nutritious alternative to farmed and reared meats.
Appropriately, Rice and Circus’ offshoot branch is located in the basement of Shibuya PARCO, known affectionately as the “Chaos Kitchen,” where it rubs shoulders with drag queen bars and vegan izakayas. Just a 5-minute walk northwest of JR Shibuya Station, it’s definitely worth the trip.
