MUNI ALAIN DUCASSE
Through interpretations by Alessandro Guardiani, Arashiyama’s Michelin-starred MUNI ALAIN DUCASSE brings to life acclaimed chef Alain Ducasse’s flamboyant French gastronomy using Japanese ingredients.
Restaurant Details
If there is ever the fear that Alain Ducasse, the Monegasque culinary pioneer with 21 Michelin stars, has exhausted all his tricks, head to Kyoto. Tucked in the boutique hotel Muni Kyoto by Togetsukyo Bridge, MUNI ALAIN DUCASSE is an extension of the magical and masterful mind of Ducasse and is the latest addition to his burgeoning empire.
The gastronomic gourmands and devotees of chef Alain Ducasse’s flamboyant culinary philosophy delight in chef Alessandro Guardiani’s liberal use of Japanese ingredients. Guardiani was Ducasse’s apprentice; he had worked at one of his restaurants for 10 years, making his way to becoming an assistant chef to Amaury Bourg at Le Meurice Alain Ducasse in Paris before being crowned head chef of this Kyoto concept.
As far as celebrity chef-backed French restaurants go, this new destination raises the bar. Japanese-drenched flavors sit on the edge of the French water at MUNI ALAIN DUCASSE. Dinner and short course menus reflect the seasons, with succulent offerings ranging from butternut squash with Buddha hand and Jerusalem artichoke smoked with hay to unagi with ragu and comte cheese.
Adding a personal touch of luxury, servers pour sauces at the table for optimal temperature and distribution of flavors. Dishes are plated on Limoges porcelains, like Bernardaud and J. L. Coquet. The sommelier manages an extensive wine list catering to a wide range of preferences.
The upscale interior overlooking a walled-in rock garden dresses for the occasion, while the private room dazzles with Baccarat glass and gold accents. The nearby wooden Togetsukyo Bridge over the Katsura River is perfect for a quiet evening stroll after dinner.
