One would expect a traditional sushi restaurant in the northern part of Japan to be a little run down, perhaps with an old-school interior. Kukizen is the exact opposite — the restaurant’s space is fully refined, modern yet classic. The abundant windows allow a good amount of sunlight to shine in, which adds on to the refreshing environment needed to focus on good sushi with clarity.
This two Michelin starred restaurant definitely earned its stripes. Led by an Otaru City native, the chef uses the best of what the city has to offer — only the freshest picks are used. The rolling onigiri is a huge hit, along with other nigiri dishes including salmon roe and local shrimp.
The chef of Kukizen demonstrates deep knowledge and excellent skills while preparing dishes for guests. Uniqueness is evident in every corner, like adding soy sauce to a red and white vinegar mix which complements the seafood taste extremely well. At the end of the meal, guests can leave this exquisite restaurant peaceful and satisfied, likely amazed at the sheer value for money on offer here.
