Koban Sushi
A trip to this small town in Fukushima is well justified by a meal at one of the best hidden sushi gems in Japan.
Restaurant Details
Tanagura is a small inland town in Fukushima Prefecture with a big secret: one of the region’s top sushi restaurants calls it home. If you’re traveling up to the north of Japan, make sure to stop off here for a sushi dinner the way.
If you do, you’ll be treated to nigiri folded and shaped with a delicacy that makes each piece reminiscent of flower buds. Some unconventional dishes are on offer too, such as Hokkaido oysters slow cooked in peanut oil, and abalone softly steamed for 4 hours.
Although the location may be somewhat off the beaten track, those who make the trip here won’t be disappointed, with something to surprise even the most seasoned sushi connoisseur.

Okonomiyaki Koei Ousaka-en
The original Okonomiyaki Ousaka-en was forced to shut its doors, but the popular horumon-yaki chain Koei adopted it into the fold, giving it new life. It now delights dozens of visitors to Seibu-Shinjuku a day with grilled Kansai staples.
Teppan Dining O
This Kitashinchi restaurant makes the typically formal teppanyaki experience into a more laid-back affair, in true Kansai fashion. Enjoy premium ingredients like wagyu beef and Nichinan mochi pork in a relaxing space.
President Chibo Kita
This Kansai series of restaurants elevates the humble okonomiyaki — a Kansai street food staple — far above its origins, by serving it alongside high-class ingredients like top-quality kuroge wagyu black beef and live abalone.
Yoyogi Milk Hall
There is a hidden, retro space wrapped in nostalgic memorabilia just steps away from Yoyogi Station where diners can enjoy the glimmer of 70s to 90s Japan.
