Restaurant Details
Where there’s smoke, there’s sake? Ibushigin Kazuya in Kyoto’s Nakagyo Ward certainly follows this philosophy with a menu that offers an extensive selection of smoked dishes and a staggering amount of sake. Meat, fish, eggs and more are all smoked to perfection, each providing a unique and delicious flavor.
Their smoked egg topped with uni (sea urchin) and ikura (salmon roe) is a notable standout. Extensive course menus allow guests to try some of their favorite foods in new ways or experience a smoky combination they hadn’t thought of before.
Ibushigin Kazuya pairs their smoking expertise with an expansive and curated sake collection. Featuring 120 varieties of Japan’s UNESCO-recognized rice wine, sake connoisseurs can appreciate the collection’s attention to detail, while newcomers can try a variety of sake to find their favorites. All of Japan’s 47 prefectures are represented by at least one bottle in the collection, allowing guests to travel across Japan through each sip of sake.
Their attention to detail extends to the atmosphere with three distinct seating options available. Counter seats made from hinoki cypress provide an intimate location for small groups to witness the chefs’ craftsmanship up close. Table seating is available for larger groups, and bar stool seating features sake bottles from the collection adorning the walls.
Located in Kyoto’s central district of Nakagyo, Ibushigin Kazuya is just a 5-minute walk from Kyoto-Kawaramachi Station. Several popular attractions are nearby, with Yasaka Shrine and Nishiki Market each a 15-minute walk or less from the izakaya.
Sumibi Kazuya, its sister store, also sits in the same district just a few blocks away. In contrast to the main store, its specialty is charcoal grilling rather than smoking, providing the opportunity to compare these two distinct cooking styles.
