Experience Details
Literally translated, "oyakodon" means 'parent and child rice bowl' because it’s a dish that contains both chicken and egg. This logical yet unexpected combination turned into a Japanese household staple. Using traditional cooking techniques and readily available ingredients, you can create this hot, comforting and delicious meal that can be enjoyed every day of the year.
This oyakodon-making class will be led by Yuki-san, a Tokyo-born local home cook who loves to share her culture with the world. She’ll walk you through every step, including preparing ingredients, perfecting cooking techniques and presenting the dish to look mouthwateringly good.
Yuki-san’s background is in the culinary industry and digital marketing, but her true passion is sharing her knowledge and passion for Japanese home cooking with the world. To fulfil this mission, she renovated their grandmother’s kitchen in Tokyo and turned it into a Japanese home cooking school, the setting for your oyakodon cooking class. Each lesson is designed to teach participants not just step-by-step recipes but the story behind them, giving you a glimpse of the cultural significance of each dish.
Yuki-san will teach you how to lightly fry the chicken, build an umami sauce and top it off with a silky layer of eggs. In addition to the oyakodon, Yuki-san will teach you how to make miso soup, a traditional soup made from a fermented soybean paste.
Mastering oyakodon can be tricky, but with Yuki-san’s help, you'll learn all that goes into making this dish. By the end of the cooking class, you'll enjoy your steamy meal and receive the recipes in English to recreate a taste of Japan back at home!
