Experience Details

Bento boxes are traditional packed meals made with several beautifully arranged foods. Bento are not just visually beautiful and deliciously fresh, but also a staple of daily life in Japan. In this bento box-making class in Tokyo, you’ll be taught what goes into making each element of this intricate meal and how to arrange it in your very own bento box, which you’ll take home as a souvenir. Your host, Yuki-san, is a local Tokyo home cook passionate about sharing her culture with cooking enthusiasts of all backgrounds. The bento-making experience takes place in what used to be Yuki-san’s grandmother’s kitchen, now fully renovated and reinvented as a Japanese home cooking school. The classes are focused on sharing recipes passed down for generations, with Yuki-san walking you through the equipment, utensils and ingredients used to create authentic dishes. During this bento cooking class, you’ll can choose among two types of bento, each containing four different elements: 1. A karaage (fried chicken) bento with onigiri rice balls, tamagoyaki (Japanese-style rolled omelet) and kinpira (braised burdock root). Comforting, delicious and packed with proteins. 2. A soboro bento with seasoned tender ground chicken, nikudango (Japanese-style meatballs), isobeage (a kind of fried fish cake) and braised burdock root (kinpira). A classic bento assortment with a great variety of flavors. After the cooking portion of the class, you’ll learn how to place each element in the bento box. Yuki-san will share her photography tips for your picture-perfect bento. You'll leave this cooking class with a wealth of recipes, and take home your traditional lunch box, chopsticks and chopstick rest.
