Experience Details
Japan's love for Western-inspired dishes is no secret, and a perfect example is tonkatsu, a crispy, golden brown deep-fried pork cutlet usually served with shredded cabbage. In this class, you will learn to make authentic home-style tonkatsu and accompanying dishes with friendly hosts Arisa and Maya in their welcoming kitchen.
Born in Canada but raised in Osaka, sisters Arisa and Maya have a strong connection to the city. Both inherited a love of food and cooking from their grandmother, who owned a shabu-shabu (Japanese hot pot) restaurant. Inspired by her example, they go above and beyond to provide authentic Japanese cooking experiences with original recipes.
After you meet them at the meeting point, you'll head together to the cooking venue. In this hands-on class, participants of all cooking skills are welcome. You'll review the menu, ingredients, and procedure first and have support every step of the way. Along with tonkatsu, you'll also make miso soup, a classic Japanese side dish. Finally, tuck into your hearty meal with your hosts and classmates. To end the class on a sweet note, you'll make fruit daifuku, a soft and chewy mochi rice cake filled with sweet bean paste and seasonal fruit, and enjoy it with a cup of matcha tea.
