Experience Details
Curry rice is a beloved staple meal in households up and down Japan made with curry-roux cubes containing a mix of delicious spices. Warm, comforting, and slightly sweet, Japanese-style curry is unlike that of other countries and is a must-try when in the country. It is typically served with toppings like tonkatsu (a breaded and fried pork cutlet) or fried ebi (shrimp). Eaten over rice with a side of potato salad, curry rice can be enjoyed throughout the year and is a perfect meal to share with friends and family.
In this curry cooking class, Chef Morimi, your host, will meet you at her kitchen in Setagaya to share with you the art of traditional Japanese home cooking. Chef Morimi is from Tokyo and obtained her cooking license in 2013, she’s also an expert in Japanese home cooking, having been running her cooking school for over 15 years.
Your class will begin by going over the day's menu. Your host will then provide a demonstration of the cooking techniques you will be using before you get hands-on cooking. During the class, you will make one portion of curry rice (using pre-made roux), tonkatsu, fried shrimp, grilled vegetables and a side of Japanese-style potato salad. Chef Morimi has designed the classes to be beginner-friendly, with recipes you can recreate back home without specialized equipment or utensils; for instance, you will learn how to master cooking rice in a regular pot on the stove.
Once your dishes are complete, you’ll have time to take pictures with your food before being served a cup of green tea to enjoy with your meal. You can use this time to ask Chef Morimi any final questions you might have before being given a small souvenir from the class as well as copies of the recipes in English to bring with you so you can make this delicious curry again anytime!
