Experience Details
Do you want to acquire Japanese cooking skills? Do you have a hankering for sushi? Seeking a seaside escape just outside of Tokyo? You’re in the right place! Join Chieko for a sushi class at her home kitchen in Chiba. Choose between making chirashi (scattered) or maki (rolled) sushi, plus various seasonal side dishes. After enjoying your handmade meal, learn the art of brush and ink with a calligraphy lesson.
Chieko, a culinary enthusiast and cultural ambassador from Tokushima, has journeyed from the tranquil landscapes of her hometown to the lively cities of Kyoto, Osaka, and Los Angeles. With a family legacy in agriculture and a passion ignited by her mother's cooking, Chieko's appreciation for harmonizing ingredients flourished. Now a certified Japanese Cooking instructor, Chieko founded her cooking school in Chiba to share Japanese cuisine with overseas travelers.
During this home-cooking experience, you can choose between making chirashi (scattered) or maki (rolled) sushi. You’ll also make small dishes like miso soup and seasonal vegetable sides.
Chirashi means ‘scattered’ or ‘to scatter’, where the dish gained its name. Traditionally served on special occasions like Hinamatsuri (Girls' Day), chirashi sushi showcases an array of fresh and seasonal ingredients scattered on top of seasoned sushi rice.
Maki sushi (rolled sushi) boasts a contemporary evolution rooted in convenience. The origin of maki sushi traces back to the Edo period when street vendors wrapped fish and rice in seaweed to create a portable meal.
After you've made and enjoyed your handmade meal, learn the art of Japanese calligraphy! Write your favorite Japanese words, names, or characters (hiragana, katakana, kanji).
