Restaurant Details
Osaka is home to plenty of refined restaurants, but quirky ones? Not so much.
Enter Sushi Sakaba Sashisu, the kind of place where the words quirky and delicious belong in the same dictionary. And a glimpse at the constant cue at the storefront —this izakaya-slash-sushi joint doesn’t take reservations—makes it clear they’re not holding back on its concept.
The first thing to catch your eye as you approach is the playful noren, emblazoned with a logo of a hippo snapping up a piece of nigiri. It’s a clever nod to “kaba,” part of sakaba, which means a casual drinking spot in Japanese.
Once you make it inside, the menu takes center stage. Operating primarily as an izakaya, Sushi Sakaba Sashisu offers a sushi lineup that feels like a seafood degustation on steroids. The toro tekka maki is a prime example—a tuna roll so generously stuffed that the fish spills out of the tube. Then there’s the canned mackerel salad, where saba is served inside a can and crowned with a mountain of onions. Even starters push boundaries, like the potato salad, a heaping mound of mashed potatoes elevated with a dollop of ikura (salmon roe).
Other creations are equally daring: chawanmushi with cheese, uniku (sea urchin wrapped in roasted beef) and sushi topped with salmon roe and flying fish roe all make appearances.
The setup — an elongated U-shaped bar and compact tables — prioritizes dining over ambiance, but the warm lighting and lively atmosphere channel the cheerful energy of a bustling watering hole. Complementing the food is a drink menu with over 30 choices, dominated by wallet-friendly lemon sours that are perfect for a casual toast.
