Kuromon Market in Osaka

Brief History of Kuromon Market

Established in the Nipponbashi area of Osaka in 1902, Kuromon Ichiba Market is a local market better known as "Osaka's Kitchen." It's said to have been an area that serviced fishermen and merchant traders at the start of the 19th century. Since then, Kuromon Ichiba Market has become Osaka's go-to-market for food enthusiasts, home chefs, and high-end restaurateurs. Now it has all sorts of interesting stores crammed into its shopping street, selling all kinds of vegetables and fruit, seafood and meats, homewares, and street food snacks in an undercover arcade. It's well worth visiting to learn more about different Japanese foods available locally and throughout Japan.

It's since become a popular Osaka attraction where both locals and tourists alike can wander through the specialty stalls and family-owned shopfronts in amongst the larger retailers and mouthwatering restaurants. It's a great place to stroll along and sample different Kansai region-styled Japanese street food dishes. Visitors can easily watch as local vendors cook and prepare a range of delicious street foods like okonomiyaki and takoyaki! There are also a lot of ready-made food options, as well as restaurants ready to serve up other signature Kansai cuisines like Kuromon Market crab and other regional delicacies like Hokkaido's famous sea urchin!

2. Uofuku

Operating for well over 60 years, Uofuku is an institution of Kuromon Market specializing in serving up bright orange sea urchins or uni in Japanese. Spiked on the outside and fresh on the inside with their brightly colored flesh, these sea urchins come from Hokkaido Prefecture. Eating it fresh out of the shell is the best way to try it so that the sweetness of the sea urchin comes through as it melts in your mouth! If you like some extra zing, mix some wasabi and soy sauce to add a little extra flavor to the uni. You can also try to enjoy it wrapped in salty nori seaweed (this gives it an extra fishy edge and the essence of a sushi roll).

3. Ishibashi Shokuhin

A family-run business, Ishibashi Shokuhin has been selling all sorts of dishes for over 50 years. From lotus roots and other colorful vegetable side dishes to the most curious pickles and condiments, this is your go-to stall to taste some Japanese fish, vegetables, and fried food dishes with meat options as well.

4. Chicken Shop Maruchiku

Famous for their free-range chicken, Chicken Shop Maruchiku not only sells chicken meat but specializes in massive pieces of karaage, or Japanese fried chicken! With their signature batter that is both crunchy and light tasting as the outer coating on each of their huge chicken pieces, these are delicious and sumptuous must-try street food in Kuromon Market.

5. Chidoriya

Chidoriya is a traditional Japanese wagashi sweet shop that originated in Japan's Kyushu region. Due to their popularity, they now have many branches spread throughout the Kansai region. However, these don't extend up to the Tokyo area of Japan! Their signature sweet is a chidori manju, a specialty sweet steam bun. The dense layer on the outside of this sweet snack is more like bread than a more traditional mochi rice cake style, with thick white bean paste on the inside. It goes well with a cup of matcha green tea!

6. Takahashi Shokuhin

A local family store that has been operating for almost 100 years, Takahashi Shokuhin specializes in all kinds of tofu soybean products. They offer silken and firm tofu, fresh soy milk, and more! Their soy milk is creamy and unique in that it uses special mineral water. It's characteristically thick from using high-quality soybeans, and it also features the highest concentration of soybeans used in Osaka to make it! You can also try a soft, satisfying tofu donut or soy milk doughnut, which is more like a dense, bite-sized cake.
