Tokyo Breakfast Club: 5 Breakfast Restaurants & Cafes in Shibuya

By Avah Atherton

Home to street culture, avant-garde fashion, and a go-to for late-night outings, Shibuya is one of Tokyo's trendiest neighborhoods for a reason. It also boasts a decent breakfast scene for an area popular with night owls. You'll find cute, cozy cafes, rustic Japanese establishments, and bistros if you need a morning pick-me-up or sustenance before setting off on an adventure. Here is a list of Shibuya's top 10 breakfast spots that will satisfy your caffeine cravings and fuel your day.

To the disappointment of many early birds, Tokyo cafes and bakeries rarely open before 10 or 11am. To spare yourself the trouble of scouring the back alleys for something to eat, consider booking a hotel or ryokan with a breakfast plan. You can choose from over 400 accommodations on JAPANiCAN, with options in neighborhoods like Shibuya, Shinjuku, and Asakusa.

But maybe you have the energy to explore in the early hours. And for you, these are our recommended breakfast restaurants and cafes in Shibuya.

5 Breakfast Spots in Shibuya

  1. About Life Coffee Roasters
  2. BUY ME STAND
  3. Soba Hiyamugi Sagatani Shibuya
  4. HUSH-HUSH
  5. Bread, Espresso & Machiawase

1. About Life Coffee Brewers

A to-go coffee cup from About Life Coffee Brewers in Shibuya

About Life Coffee Brewers (ALCB) is a beloved Tokyo coffee brand with two locations in Shibuya: a hole-in-the-wall coffee stand in Dogenzaka and a cafe on the first floor of All Day Place Shibuya. If you're picky about your beans, this cafe is for you. ALCB offers a variety of hand-dripped coffee from Onibus, their parent company and roaster, and other Japanese brands. In terms of food, you'll find baked goods like banana bread and hot sandwiches to pair with your hot or cold drink. If you don't drink coffee (and we don't judge!) ALCB's menu also includes hot chocolate, fruit juice, and tea.

2. Buy Me Stand

A grilled cheese sandwich

This eaterie is a short walk south of Shibuya Station and specializes in sandwiches. There is no fixed menu; instead, the shop owner shares the day's favors every morning on Instagram. Buy Me Stand's bright interior is reminiscent of old-school American diners. Get there early because seating is limited! Alternatively, grab your brekkie to go.

Buy Me Stand occasionally collaborates with other small brands for food items like cookies or even tacos so customers can sample Tokyo's indie food culture.

3. Soba Hiyamugi Sagatani

A plate of soba (buckwheat noodles)

Shibuya has a lot of 24-hour options (they are essential if you miss the last train), but only some provide breakfast options that are delicious, comforting, and don't break the bank. Soba Hiyamugi Sagatani is a soba restaurant that runs all day, every day. While not typically part of a traditional Japanese breakfast, soba has become a great morning meal for those who want something nutritious, filling, and cheap. Soba Hiyamugi Sagatani only has counter seats, and, like at ramen joints, customers must pay for their meal at a ticket machine before sitting down.

4. HUSH HUSH

A breakfast meal at Shibuya Tokyu Rei Hotel

Working with the freshest ingredients, HUSH HUSH, located inside the Shibuya Tokyu Rei Hotel, ensures that its dishes are made with high-quality produce to build a wholesome and delicious meal. You'll find your usual suspects, omelets, tea and leafy greens, as well as a few interesting items like breakfast sliders. Guests also get access to a stocked buffet with Japanese and Western breakfast dishes.

5. Bread, Espresso & Machiawase

This popular Japanese bakery is located on the south side of the Rayard Miyashita Park shopping complex. Must-get items include their custard-filled croissants, if you woke up with a sweet tooth, or their savory egg sandwiches. They also have breakfast plates featuring omelets, a side salad, and fruit for something a little more filling if you have a long day ahead. Keep an eye out for special collaborations (like the melon pan above) and seasonal items.

Bread, Espresso & Machiawase is a trendy eaterie, so get there early or be prepared to wait in line.

Bonus Recommendation: Bistro Rojiura

If you want to go all out for breakfast or brunch, reserve a table at Bistro Rojiura, once featured in the Michelin Guide's Bib Gourmand. A true hidden gem, located only a few blocks from Shibuya Parco, you treat yourself to delicious French cuisine here. Bistro Rojiura's fluffy French toast served with crispy bacon and a drizzle of maple syrup is a must-try.

Finding a breakfast spot in Tokyo is about knowing where to look and being open to savory and sweet options, whether you want to start with a warm noodle dish or an iced coffee and croissant combo. When in doubt, you can find a decent variety of breakfast items like coffee, baked goods, and even some smoothies and hot foods at Japanese convenience stores for an affordable price. But Tokyo cafes are truly something else and worth keeping a morning free of activities for!
