———

A contemporary kappo with a modern interior design, Akiyama is a top Tokyo restaurant which combines elements from culinary cultures across Japan.

The chef worked in an izakaya, from which he derives his casual style and personal warmth. Then he trained at a prestigious sushi restaurant, learning about quality seafood. Finally, he spent time in the kitchen at a Kansai cuisine restaurant, learning the ins and outs of Osaka’s kappo dining culture.

The izakaya influence is apparent in how down to earth the cooking is — just great dishes with amazing flavors, and no showiness or ego. You’ll find delicious handmade sushi rolls on his menu. In fact the focus is mostly around great seafood, so the chef travels to Toyosu Market every morning. The sake menu is also fantastic, and changes with the seasons just like the food.

At lunch, you can order a la carte for an accessible and affordable Michelin star experience. If you want to splash out, then opt for the full, premium kappo course. This will show you all of the skills of the chef at work across several hours of fine dining.

The owner intended this place to be a comfortable spot for regulars to swing by to have a good time, and the welcoming atmosphere extends to first timers too. Reserve one of the seven counter seats to discover all the best elements of Japan’s culinary culture for yourself.
