Experience Details

At the end of a long day, few things are as comforting as a steamy bowl of savory ramen noodles paired with crispy gyoza dumplings — one of Japan’s most classic dishes. This go-to meal is readily available in many restaurants, but learning to make it yourself lets you learn more about Japanese cooking and food culture uniquely. This cooking class takes place at a 90-year-old restored townhouse in Osaka, where you'll learn about traditional cooking techniques from local hosts. After an introduction to the ingredients and condiments commonly found in kitchens throughout Japan, you’ll get hands-on cooking. First, your host will guide you through making the soy sauce-based ramen broth for ramen, cooking the pre-made noodles, and adding the pork toppings. To complete your meal, you’ll learn to make gyoza wrappers from scratch, fill them with vegetables, pork and beef and deep-fry them to crisp perfection. Sit down to enjoy your hearty meal with your host in the serene wooden interiors of the townhouse. This home, steeped in history and restored with modern facilities, provides the perfect backdrop for your culinary adventure. Feel free to ask your host about Japanese food culture during the meal and share insights about your own country and experiences. As a cute memento of the experience, you’ll get to take home a pair of Japanese chopsticks inside holders made of origami and mizuhiki decorations. Away from the bustling city lights and crowded markets, this cooking class is a great way to enjoy an authentic experience and learn about Japanese cooking, etiquette, and food traditions at your own pace.
