Experience Details
Have you heard of okonomiyaki, the savory Japanese pancake that’s also known as “Japanese pizza”? Its name literally translates to “cooked as you like it,” referring to the endless variety of ingredient combinations that can be mixed into the batter. Okonomiyaki is a beloved Japanese dish that’s also a popular party food due to its hands-on nature. In restaurants and home kitchens, people gather around the “teppan” griddle to cook and collaborate together, nourishing both their bodies and their relationships.
During this online cooking class, you’ll learn the skills to make this classic Japanese food in your own home kitchen. The class will take place on Zoom with a Japanese cooking teacher based in Japan.
You’ll need a few basic ingredients. Cabbage, eggs, and flour form the base of okonomiyaki, and you can toss in meat, seafood, and extra veggies to your liking. Since these ingredients are so accessible, you’ll be able to cook okonomiyaki from almost anywhere in the world. It is also a vegetarian-friendly dish, and you can choose to omit the meat from the batter. A list of all the ingredients and tools needed will be provided in the welcome email after booking.
Once we have cooked the mixture on a griddle or pan, we will then decorate the okonomiyaki with toppings such as mayo and okonomiyaki sauce. If you can’t purchase this special sauce, we will also be learning to make it at home during this lesson.
After this online Japanese cooking class, you’ll have learned the skills to hold your own okonomiyaki-making gatherings, and hopefully this dish will become a staple in your household!
