Experience Details

A typical Japanese rice cake, mochi is made from pounded steamed rice, which becomes sticky and stretchy. It’s a quintessential food in Japan that can be used in savory dishes or traditional sweets. Chewy and gooey in texture, mochi can be addictive and absolutely delicious. Traditional Japanese sweets are known as wagashi, and are typically made from plant-based ingredients, making them vegan-friendly and usually gluten-free. Mochi can be used to make a number of wagashi that are popular throughout Japan, although different prefectures tend to have their own regional variations on sweets too. Discover the wonders of mochi for yourself in this Mochi Making Class in Tokyo, where you’ll make 4 different types of mochi from scratch. Using traditional Japanese recipes, ingredients, and cooking techniques you’ll learn about mochi making in this hands-on lesson. This class includes strawberry daifuku mochi, dango mochi, ice cream mochi (prepared by the teacher), and warabi mochi (prepared by the teacher)! Make your own beautiful pieces of mochi which you can enjoy with a cup of green tea.

Experience Location

Meguro is surrounded by a cluster of restaurants and bars which trickle down through Meguro Dori Street, cherry blossoms line the canal along Meguro River, a popular spot for hanami season in spring. Follow the river to the west for trendy bars and hipster cafes of Nakameguro, where the ward stretches as far as Yutenji and Tokyo’s little Europe in Jiyugaoka. Meguro is home to 500 Buddha statues in Daienji Temple, as well as the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography and the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum, alongside the much more unusual Meguro Parasitological Museum.
