An Asakusa izakaya that focuses on Kyushu specialties from southern Japan, particularly horse sashimi.

Restaurant Details

It seems a little like an act of defiance for such a strongly Kyushu-style izakaya to be located so close to one of Tokyo’s most iconic landmarks, the Azuma-bashi Bridge.

But that’s exactly what Basashiya Masashi’s Asakusa branch does: offer up the best foods of Japan’s southernmost major island of Kyushu, from Fukuoka and Saga in the north to Kagoshima and Miyazaki in the south. The owner, who hails from Kyushu, has made it his life’s mission to serve dishes that make Kyushu diaspora long for home, and people who have never been there want to visit.

It is called Basashiya for a reason, however: “basashi-ya” literally means “horse sashimi shop.” And raw horse meat is precisely what most diners who come to Basashiya Masashi come for. A specialty of Kumamoto Prefecture, basashi is not only leaner than beef, but has a stronger flavor and a firmer texture. It’s a popular choice among meat lovers who are curious about something slightly different.

While sashimi is how it’s most commonly eaten in Kumamoto, the course menus offer a stunning spread of horse prepared in a number of different ways, including deep-fried, or in a hotpot of sukiyaki or shabu-shabu. Regardless of how it’s prepared, the horse meat is impeccable: sourced from Senko Farm in Kumamoto, one of the prefecture’s most famous suppliers of horse meat, the quality is simply unmatched.

Of course, the Kyushu izakaya experience isn’t complete without Kyushu shochu, of which there are dozens of varieties at Basashiya Masashi — not just the best of Kumamoto, but from all over the region. Guests looking to sample as many as possible should opt for the all-you-can-drink plan: Kyushu certainly isn’t running out of shochu to try any time soon.

A meal at Basashiya Masashi Asakusa is such an authentically Kumamoto experience that guests are likely to forget that they’re still in Tokyo — at least until they glance out the window and catch a glimpse of the Azuma-bashi Bridge.
