Au Soleil Couchant
Au Soleil Couchant may have a Michelin ping to its name, but it's still a humble neighborhood French eatery where diners don’t feel out of place.
Restaurant Details
The unmistakable French flag perched by the entrance sets the theme and hints at the convivial charm of this bistro. Just east of Tanimachi-Suji Shopping Street, the France-trained couple who run this eatery work to a daily chalkboard menu of part Auvergne and Bouchon repertoire, part bourgeois classics — and a bit of other regional delights. The chef oversees the kitchen, while his partner manages the dessert and table service.
The menu is proudly French with humble roots and an emphasis on nutrition. Hefty servings of seasonal vegetables from the farmer’s market always accompany appetizers of fresh wild amberjack carpaccio, quiche lorraine and smoked salmon rillettes. Mains of Basque-style Oyama chicken, pork chou farci, and pan-fried Spanish mackerel cater to Japanese palates while still reflecting the couple’s love for French cuisine.
Meanwhile, dishes like tender pork confit with lentils and hearty lamb with couscous evoke memories of the countryside. Desserts are delightfully simple and delicate, like nougat glace, chocolate terrine and far breton, paired with coffee. Dining here is a warm embrace from French Normandy.
