Experience Details
For many, visiting Tokyo feels much like stepping into the future, with autonomous robots, self-cleaning toilets and high-speed trains as everyday sights. However, the Japanese capital also has something in store for those who want to connect with ancient traditions and learn its classic arts.
Step out of Nippori Station and travel back in time as you stroll Yanaka’s old streets. Here, you’ll learn to make traditional Japanese confectioneries, known as wagashi, guided by local hosts. You’ll then walk the area and visit two shops selling Chiyogami paper and senbei crackers.
Wagashi sweets reflect the seasons, featuring botanical and colorful designs, and are usually enjoyed with matcha. Your hosts will guide you through the wagashi-making process, from kneading the dough to shaping the sweets into delicate motifs.
After making and enjoying your wagashi, you’ll explore Yanaka. Your first stop will be a shop selling Chiyogami paper. The colorful patterns of kimono originally inspired this colorful decorative paper from the Edo period. You'll find handmade products like origami paper, boxes and even folding screens at the shop.
Finally, the tour ends with a visit to a local shop that sells a popular savory snack — senbei! Rice crackers flavored with soy sauce or dusted with white sugar, there’s many flavors to choose from. This particular shop has been in business for multiple generations and is beloved by locals. After the tour, you’re free to continue exploring, shopping for souvenirs, and simply enjoying the amazing ambiance of Yanaka.
