Experience Details
Japan has a rich and delicious food culture, but finding dishes that accommodate vegetarian and gluten-free diets can be challenging. In this private cooking class, you’ll learn how to modify traditional Japanese dishes to make them perfect for those following vegetarian and gluten-free diets. Then, you’ll be able to take these recipes home with you and cook them again and again.
Your host, Emi, is a Tokyo local with a passion for sharing Japanese culture with international travelers through cooking. She has designed her classes to suit all cooking levels, with a step-by-step cooking process that ensures every guest will have an enjoyable experience. In this cooking class, she has prepared a menu of traditional Japanese vegetarian dishes as well as modifications for non-vegetarian dishes that you can choose from to build your own Japanese teishoku set meal.
Guests can choose three dishes from the following menu:
-Shiraae (mashed tofu salad with avocado)
-Shio koji soup (a rich vegetable soup made with fermented rice)
-Onigiri (rice balls)
-Gyoza (pan-fried dumplings with fillings. The gluten-free option will use rice flour to make the gyoza skin)
-Vegetarian Nikujaga (A hearty stew of potatoes, carrots and onions with one or two seasonal vegetables used in place of meat)
-Hijiki seaweed salad
-Sweet potato mitarashi dango (dango dumplings covered in a sweet soy sauce glaze)
If you don’t choose onigiri, a bowl of rice will be included alongside your three dishes. Soy sauce contains a small amount of wheat, so please let Emi know if it’s okay to use it. Please specify your three dishes of choice upon booking.
