Experience Details
What better way to experience the laid-back coastal charm of Fukuoka than with a visit to a local home chef’s kitchen for a hands-on cooking class? In this lesson on Japanese cuisine, you’ll become a student of Sayaka, a home cook with nine years of experience leading cooking classes. Sayaka is fluent in English and has lived in Europe and the US, giving her a unique perspective on authentic recipes.
You’ll learn to make two different Japanese staple home-cooked dishes. The first is omurice. This bright yellow, visually stunning dish has been a classic meal for at least 100 years, and is a Japanese take on a Western omelet. It involves carefully cooking eggs until just set, then wrapping the omelet in a bed of rice.
Next, Sayaka will teach you to make tonkatsu, deep-fried pork cutlets. Under Sayaka’s guidance, you will learn to master this process in order to create a satisfying crunchy exterior while the meat remains rich and decadent on the inside.
The class takes place in Sayaka’s home, a welcoming environment where you can cook and get to know each other. You’ll be able to experience a local Japanese kitchen as well as sit down and rest in the living space. Before leaving, Sayaka will explain to you how to recreate these recipes back at home to carry the memory of the experience with you, no matter where you go.
