Experience Details
In Japan, celebrating the New Year involves more than just making festive dishes or gathering with family. New Year meals are meticulously crafted and intentionally enjoyed, with each element expressing wishes like prosperity, health and well-being.
Most ready-made New Year foods available, however, are off-limits for those with dietary restrictions, and their meaning might not be easily understood by those unfamiliar with these traditions. To bridge this gap, this class gives you a rare chance to learn about Japanese New Year traditions while catering to several dietary needs.
Yuka, your host, will welcome you into her home in Tokyo where you'll learn how to make traditional Japanese New Year's foods, their historical background and cultural importance. Traditional recipes will be adapted with fresh, seasonal ingredients for vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free guests, with a halal-friendly option also available upon request.
