Experience Details
Nerikiri is a type of wagashi (traditional Japanese sweet) often paired with tea ceremonies. Made with glutinous rice flour and bean paste dough, they are known for their beautifully detailed natural and seasonal motifs, with one of the more popular designs being cherry blossoms for spring. In this private wagashi-making class and tea-tasting in the laid-back Yanaka district of Tokyo, you’ll explore the world of traditional Japanese sweets and experience how they pair with a variety of Japanese green teas.
You’ll start by learning the basics of making nerikiri wagashi from your friendly host before creating your own beautiful design. Opt for a seasonal motif or make something from your imagination — it’s up to you! Nerikiri is traditionally served during tea ceremonies, so when you finish making your sweets, it’ll be time for a tea tasting.
Try three different types of Japanese green tea - matcha, sencha (green tea made from tea leaves rather than tea leaf powder), and hojicha (roasted green tea). Taste the subtle differences of each as you enjoy them in the traditional way alongside your wagashi. You’ll also learn how and when each tea is commonly served in Japanese homes, giving you a window into the daily life of Japanese people.
There’s also an option to make one additional kind of wagashi (see Options below!).
