Experience Details
Mochi is a Japanese rice cake made of mochigome, a short-grain glutinous rice. It has a soft, chewy outer layer and a deliciously sticky filling made of sweetened red bean paste. Indulge your sweet tooth with this fun course on how to make strawberry daifuku and sanshoku dango (hanami dango). The class takes place in the serene neighborhood of Mitaka on the western edge of central Tokyo.
Your host, Kaori, is a certified wagashi instructor and a member of the Wagashi Promotion Association. Her journey into the world of Japanese confectionery is inspired by her grandmother, who used to work in a wagashi café and made wagashi for her every year. Aside from making wagashi, Kaori is also passionate about calligraphy and handcraft. At the end of the class, you'll receive a handmade gift from her. She works as a volunteer guide in Tokyo and enjoys meeting people from different cultural backgrounds. She can also provide local tips for exploring Mitaka!
Make yourself comfortable in her cozy kitchen while Kaori shares cultural background information about mochi and how it gained popularity in Japan. You'll learn how to make mochi by watching Kaori’s detailed demonstrations and then trying them yourself. Kaori will also demonstrate how to make three types of mochi: mochi ice cream (yukimi daifuku), warabimochi, and isobeyaki for you to enjoy.
Then, it’s time for you to unleash your cooking talent! At the end of the class, the group will gather to enjoy the sweet and gooey mochi you've just made while sipping on refreshing matcha green tea.
Immerse yourself in the rich world of Japanese confectionery — a 2-hour experience as delightful as the mochi itself!
