Experience Details

Japan is famous for its food — which also includes its baked goods. Much like the French baguette or Indian naan, the country has its flagship baked confections and among the most popular is shokupan. Sweet and fluffy, this milk bread is usually cut in thick slices and widely enjoyed for breakfast, sometimes served with spreads or toppings. You’ll find packaged shokupan in supermarkets and bakeries, but if you want to break it down to the crumbs, you can learn the art of making it from scratch with an expert baker in this Tokyo baking class 15 minutes by bus from Shinjuku Station’s West Exit.

You’ll start by mixing the ingredients using a standing mixer and learning more about the process from your host, a baker with over 15 years of experience. Discover what makes Japanese bread unique as you shape it and put it in the oven. Once ready, you can enjoy your steamy, fresh shokupan and keep the recipe so you can make it again anytime.

And while milk bread is delicious, Japan has a vast array of other signature baked goods, and your host is eager to teach you more. You can opt to learn how to make melonpan (a melon-shaped pastry with a sugary crisp shell a soft inside), make both shokupan and melonpan, or make a whopping total of three kinds of baked goods. Your third will be a choice between anpan, a soft bun filled with sweet bean paste, or curry bread (see Options). Whichever you choose, remember to go hungry — and expect to eat lots of delicious bread!
