Tokuzomaru Shimoda
In addition to the historic Amimoto Tokuzomaru, this seafood restaurant specializes in fresh, locally sourced seafood loved by generations of fishermen.
Restaurant Details
Several attractions already draw crowds to the sunny, salt-breezed resort town of Shimoda: surfers riding the waves at Shirahama Beach, families relaxing on the soft white sand and divers exploring the vibrant coral reefs and marine life at Mikimoto Island. With the arrival of Tokuzomaru Shimoda in 1998 — the latest addition from Amimoto Tokuzomaru in Inatori — the town gains yet another compelling reason to visit.
Looking at the storefront, where a giant, three-dimensional wooden fish is mounted, it’s easy to see where Tokuzomaru Shimoda’s focus lies. The original restaurant, established in 1971 at the Inatori fishing port, traces its roots back to Amimoto's beginnings as a wholesaler in 1926. Its 90-plus years of history trickles down to the venue, which shares the same mission of sharing local Izu-based fishermen delicacies with the broader audience. The menu is bound by the store’s specialty: red bream simmered in a traditional broth, along with a variety of other seafood offerings, including prized catches like spiny lobster.
The calm, historically inspired design reflects the restaurant’s rich heritage and the fresh, hearty local flavors that define its dishes. Both Western seating and traditional tatami mat seating are available, so locals and visitors alike can choose how they would like to receive their meals. On the first floor, the brand operates as a seafood souvenir shop.
Tokuzomaru Shimoda’s special, reservation-only course brings out the big guns: an assortment of pristine sashimi served in a boat-shaped sushi barrel called tairyo-bune, a whole red brean simmered in special broth and the ultra-luxe spiny lobster grilled in its shell.
