Namba Sushi Matsumoto
A legendary Edomae sushi restaurant expands to the heart of Osaka, where it serves the same excellent sushi that earned it a Michelin star.
Restaurant Details
Every sushi aficionado in Japan should be familiar with the name Sushi Matsumoto. The restaurant already enjoyed significant popularity prior to its receiving a Michelin star in 2019 and 2020, but only saw said popularity skyrocket with the coveted accolade.
While previously the only way Kansai sushi lovers could get a taste of this vaunted sushi was to travel to Kanto, Namba Sushi Matsumoto now brings this same excellence to the Kansai region. Located right in the heart of the bustling Namba district, the restaurant brings one of Tokyo’s most beloved traditional foods to Kansai.
Just as with the original Akasaka restaurant, each course menu at Namba Sushi Matsumoto is carefully crafted to not just show off the freshness of the ingredients, or the chef’s mastery of the craft of Edomae sushi, but also his inventiveness in creating course menus that put innovative spins on a traditional culinary form. Every course’s place in the greater menu is carefully considered, balancing and contrasting the contemporary with the traditional.
Lovers of sea urchin (uni) in particular hold the restaurant in high regard; two of their most popular dishes are the squid-wrapped uni, as well as the rice coated in uni, overlaid with slices of nodoguro blackthroat seaperch, an extremely rare and delicious deep-sea fish.
Diners can watch the chef himself at work by taking their seats at the hinoki cypress counter, or they can adjourn to a separate private room for a special occasion, like an important meeting or celebration. Nonetheless, Namba Sushi Matsumoto serves as a serene escape from the crowds outside, where Edomae sushi is at its finest.
