Housed in a former ironworks site, Genso offers a French-focused degustation menu centered around the elemental powers of fire, water, wind and earth.

Restaurant Details

Debuting in late 2023, Genso was built upon a former ironworks site in Sakuragawa, which has received a thoughtful facelift, and now exudes industrial spirit. The history of the space envelops the restaurant, with heavy beams, skylights, raw concrete walls, and marble accents turning the venue into a culinary factory humming with young talents dedicated to French cuisine. Wisteria trellises drape over the storefront, framing a brass-colored metal door in a beautiful play between inorganic and organic.

It’s this all-or-nothing spirit that has allowed Genso to gain significant traction since its opening, culminating in a Michelin feature just a year after its inauguration.

Genso’s 13-course degustation centers around the elemental theme of fire, water, wind and earth. Fire is illustrated through heat transfer in cooking techniques, such as the bonito grilled over straw. The soup highlights the pristine qualities of water or in the soup infused with kinome, the buds of a Japanese pepper tree. Wind is embodied by the aromas of herbs and the natural fragrances of the ingredients, while the earth is honored through local Osaka vegetables, beautifully presented on a wooden tray throughout the course. In tribute to the site’s original life, elements of iron are woven into the dishes, featuring iron-rich tuna and garnishes that resemble iron objects.

The sommelier carefully selects wines and non-alcoholic beverages to complement each dish. With just six tables seating two guests each, Genso offers an intimate setting perfect for gourmet couples.
