Asaba Ryokan
Enjoy the peace of a monastic life, without the austerity, at this high-class inn and restaurant.
Restaurant Details
For a luxury Japanese dining experience, a calm atmosphere is paramount. Where could be a more peaceful location than the grounds of a temple?
Asaba Ryokan is housed in a building which is over five centuries old, originally constructed as a lodging for the monks of nearby Shigetsu-den Temple. Nowadays it is one of the most luxurious ryokan in Shizuoka.
The restaurant at this traditional temple inn serves up some truly legendary cuisine on their a la carte menu. Warm golden stews of conger eel and mushroom, fish hotpot from the nearby oceans, freshwater trout charcoaled in summer — every one of their dishes displays unbeatable quality and deceptive simplicity.
In winter, they serve a hotpot with minced game fowl meatballs and vegetables. Crack an egg in at the end and eat it with the last of the broth. The rich flavor will stay with you long after, as will the memories of the beautiful tatami dining rooms, and serene gardens outside — a dining experience to clear the mind and refresh the spirit completely.
