Akakichi
Don’t let the journey put you off; the delectable nigiri, premium sake, and inventive appetizers more than justify the trip to Hakatajima Island.
Restaurant Details
This Michelin-starred sushi restaurant is by no means the easiest to get to, located as it is on Hakatajima Island, but it’s well worth the trip. The island itself is peaceful and laid-back, with long, clean beaches, perfect for summer days.
In the restaurant, you’ll take a seat at the counter, and be presented with the fish for the day’s menu before they’re cut and served to you. A range of techniques are used to prepare them, with some varieties aged to bring out the best in the flavors, as in Tokyo’s Edomae style.
A typical menu at Akakichi might include a range of nigiri, covering squid, sea bream, octopus, sea urchin, prawns, fatty tuna (lightly pickled to enhance the flavors), tamagoyaki, and more! Aside from these standard items, the appetizer dishes break with convention, featuring prime wagyu beef, and salmon liver sauce used in a risotto with vinegared rice.
No sushi meal is really complete without a healthy amount of sake, and a healthy amount is exactly what’s on offer at this Michelin-ranked establishment. If you have the time to make the pilgrimage to this top sushi restaurant, you’ll be well rewarded with gourmet delights and lifelong memories.
