Experience Details
Enter the world of one of Japan's most prolific and celebrated artists — Katsushika Hokusai, a woodblock master known for his 36 Views of Mt Fuji and the iconic Great Wave off Kanagawa. This exclusive, limited-time experience gives you the rare opportunity to see an impressive collection of his work guided by specialists and partake in traditional cultural activities right in the heart of Tokyo.
You'll start by exploring the Sumida Hokusai Museum in Tokyo's Sumida ward, where Hokusai lived for much of his long life. You'll have the unique chance to visit before opening hours and enjoy a private tour accompanied by its curator and an English-speaking guide, who will share fascinating insights into the artist's life and creative process and explain some of his notable works.
After the tour, you'll step into the shoes of Hokusai himself by learning to make a ukiyo-e folding screen. Under the expert guidance of a professional folding screen craftsman who works at Tokyo's only store specializing in folding screens, you'll learn about the history and significance of folding screens. Then, you'll make your ukiyo-e byobu (a folding screen made with several joined panels) and receive a karakuri byobu folding screen as a souvenir.
After the workshop, you'll continue your journey through history, this time savoring Japan's traditional cuisine. Enjoy a delectable Edomae sushi meal prepared by a seasoned local sushi chef, served with tea and sake. After the meal, you'll finish your experience by partaking in a traditional tea ceremony and enjoying matcha tea and wagashi sweets in a serene setting.
