Experience Details

Maki (rolled) sushi is perhaps the most recognizable type of sushi outside of Japan, with an endless variety of popular fillings and styles to choose from. In this Kitakyushu (Fukuoka) cooking class, you’ll put a seasonal spin on maki sushi by incorporating a beautiful cherry blossom tree motif.

Your host will begin with a brief introduction and class overview, teaching you about the ingredients and recipes you’ll work with. Then, it’ll be time to design your sakura-themed maki sushi. You’ll start by portioning the vinegared sushi rice and coloring it to match the vibrant colors of the cherry blossoms. This class doesn’t use any artificial coloring. Instead, you’ll use plum and sakura denbu (a pink decorative condiment made of fluffy fish flakes).

Then, it’ll be time to assemble your sushi, rolling it up in nori (seaweed) using a bamboo mat. When you cut the roll into four equal pieces, you’ll reveal a beautiful cherry blossom tree in the center. Accent the design with nori flakes to complete your work of art.

The cute creations don’t stop at sushi. You’ll also learn how to make tamagoyaki (Japanese rolled omelet). Beat the eggs and use a special Japanese omelet pan to grill the eggs to fluffy perfection. Finally, cut the tamagoyaki into adorable heart shapes to pair with your sakura sushi.

When the cooking is complete, it’ll be time to sit back and savor your handmade sushi and tamagoyaki. During sakura season, you can choose to pack your meal into a bento box and visit a local park to enjoy your dishes under the blooming cherry blossom trees (weather permitting.)
